Poland secured their second consecutive victory decided by a tie-breaker at the 2025 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship in Thailand. They overcame a determined Belgian squad in a late Saturday eighth-final match in Bangkok, advancing to the next knockout stage. As the world`s number three ranked team, Poland is set to face top-ranked Italy in a quarterfinal match on Wednesday, September 3.
The encounter between Poland and Belgium was a dramatic contest. Belgium initially gained the upper hand by winning the extended first set. However, Poland, the Central European team, responded by winning the next two sets, taking control of the game. Despite this, the «Yellow Tigers» fought back, pushing the match to a decisive tie-breaker, which Poland ultimately won 3-2 (scores: 25-27, 25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 15-10).
Poland`s strong performance in offense, with 65 successful attacks compared to Belgium`s 52, and their superior net defense, featuring 15 kill blocks against Belgium`s 10, proved crucial in this challenging duel. Outside hitter Martyna Lukasik was a standout player, scoring 20 points, which included one block and two aces. Middle blocker and captain Agnieszka Korneluk also made a significant impact, contributing five kill blocks and an ace to her 15-point total, a score matched by opposite Magdalena Stysiak, who added two blocks. Poland`s second opposite, Malwina Smarzek, also achieved a double-digit score with 13 points, including two serving points and two blocks.
«We knew the Belgian team would give their all, and they played exceptionally well. There were moments when we didn`t perform at our best, and we definitely need to improve. We hope to maintain a high level in the next game,» Lukasik stated. «We must focus on improving not just our volleyball skills, but also our mental resilience. We need to be more consistent. That`s what we`re missing. And I believe this team can achieve it, especially in the most challenging matches. I`m pleased we won this one and are still in the competition.»
Belgium demonstrated better serving, achieving 10 aces compared to Poland`s seven, and also committed slightly fewer unforced errors during the intense five-set match (25 errors versus Poland`s 27). Their outside hitter and captain, Britt Herbots, delivered a match-high 23 points, including an ace and a block. The 22-year-old opposite Pauline Martin contributed an additional 19 points, while setter Elise Van Sas impressed Belgian fans with five aces and three kill blocks, accumulating a total of 10 points.
«Everyone truly believed we could win this big match against Poland today, and I wasn`t ready to pack my bags and return to Belgium. Right now, it`s all emotion, but when we analyze it later, we`ll certainly find positives. Getting this close to a team like Poland is incredible, but when you`re so close, it hurts even more,» Herbots remarked. «I think we did a fantastic job. I`m really proud of the team. In the fifth set, we were a bit too nervous. We lacked some experience at certain moments. It hurts now, but tomorrow we should be proud of this. There`s a huge difference between our performance in the first week of VNL and where we are today. We`ve worked incredibly hard every single day, and we will definitely continue to grow in the coming years.»
The eighth-final round in Bangkok will continue on Sunday. Matches include China versus France at 17:00 local time (10:00 UTC), followed by Brazil against the Dominican Republic at 20:30 (13:30).

Polonia consiguió su segunda victoria consecutiva decidida en un desempate en el Campeonato Mundial de Voleibol Femenino FIVB 2025 en Tailandia. Superaron a un decidido equipo belga en un partido de octavos de final el sábado por la noche en Bangkok, avanzando a la siguiente fase eliminatoria.
