Qatar is set to make its second appearance at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in 2025, marking a significant milestone in its rapid rise as one of Asia`s most promising teams. Following their debut in 2022, they return to the global stage with enhanced experience, a stronger track record, and increasing international acclaim.
The team will compete in Pool B at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. Their schedule includes matches against the Netherlands on 13 September, Poland on 15 September, and Romania on 17 September.
This back-to-back qualification highlights a remarkable period of success, featuring multiple podium finishes. In 2023, Qatar secured a bronze medal at the Asian Championship – their best performance to date – and followed it with a championship title at the 2024 Asian Nations Cup. They also reached the final of the 2023 FIVB Challenger Cup and earned another bronze earlier this year at the AVC Men’s Volleyball Nations Cup.
A substantial portion of this progress has been facilitated by the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment programme. In 2025, Qatar received a significant sum of USD 496,000 in targeted funding, allocated to provide 12 months of coaching support for both their men’s and women’s national teams across both indoor and beach volleyball disciplines.
Under the guidance of head coach Camilo Andres Soto, Qatar’s men’s volleyball team has effectively leveraged this support to forge a cohesive and highly competitive squad. Key players include outside hitter Wadidie Raimi and middle blocker Belal Abunabot, both of whom played crucial roles in their 2025 AVC campaign.
The national league, featuring prominent clubs like Al Rayyan and Al Arabi, plays a vital role in nurturing local talent while simultaneously attracting international expertise, thereby elevating the overall standard of the sport within the country.
Qatar has consistently demonstrated its ambitious aspirations in volleyball. The nation previously hosted the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship and famously achieved a 45–43 set victory over Venezuela in 2017, an unforgettable match recognized as one of the highest-scoring sets in volleyball history. Furthermore, the men’s beach volleyball team has brought Olympic glory, clinching a bronze medal in Tokyo with the duo of Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan.
With a solid foundational structure, strategic international guidance, and a string of tangible achievements, Qatar’s anticipated return to the World Championship unequivocally reflects the team’s enhanced consistency and remarkable development over the past three years.
